In our fast-paced, high-stress world, many of us carry tension in ways we don’t even realize. While deep tissue massages and physical therapy have their place, there is a quieter, more subtle approach to healing that is gaining traction: CranioSacral Therapy (CST).
If you’ve been searching for a non-invasive way to manage chronic pain, stress, or dis-ease, CST might be the "missing link" in your wellness routine.
What Exactly is CranioSacral Therapy?
Developed by osteopathic physician Dr. John Upledger in the 1970s, CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the physiological body system called the craniosacral system.
This system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a touch generally no heavier than the weight of a nickel (about 5 grams), CST helps release restrictions in these tissues to improve the functioning of the central and autonomic nervous system.
How Does It Work?
Unlike a traditional massage that targets muscles, CST focuses on the rhythm of the CranioSacral System. By normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord, the body is better able to self-correct.
The Assessment: The practitioner lightly touches various parts of the body (often the head, base of the spine, and feet) to monitor the rhythm of the system.
The Release: When a restricted or area of tension is found, the practitioner uses delicate manual techniques to help the tissue relax.
The Result: This process encourages the body’s natural healing mechanisms to "reset," often leading to a deep state of relaxation.
